When to Refer a Behavioural Case
It's never too early to refer a behavioural case to us, as the sooner they are referred, the sooner we can help them!
1:Â The Owner Mentions Behaviour Changes
Quite often, an owner may mention behaviour struggles in passing during their consultation. It isn't always possible for you to go into this in detail due to time constraints, but we know that taking action on behaviour struggles sooner is the best option for the pet and owner.
2:Â The Owner Asks for Behaviour Advice
For many owners, behaviour struggles have to become quite severe before they ask for help. This can be because they are worried about being judged, or they are blaming themselves for their pet's struggles. We also find that asking their vet for help is often considered a 'last resort' after nothing else has helped. As a first-opinion vet, you don't need to have the answers; you just need to have the appropriate referral service for your clients and their pets.
3:Â You Notice The Pet is Struggling in the Clinic Setting
Fearful vet visits are often perceived as 'normal' by many owners, but this fearful reaction often escalates over time and can interfere with the ability to provide appropriate veterinary care or carry out recommended investigations. And owners often put off visiting the vet because of the stress it causes them and their pet. Helping these patients transform their perception of the vet clinic and handling not only stops vet visits being stressful and traumatic for the animal and owner, it also ensures health concerns aren't addressed in an appropriate timescale.
4:Â Urgent Cases
Bite risk cases or cases that have bitten are always a priority for a behaviour referral. A bite incident does not mean there is no hope, and whenever possible, a referral should always be sought as part of the urgent plan.
